I was asked by a colleague to write a short note to some individuals who were retiring from the Navy, kind of like a ‘thanks from a grateful nation’ thing. I was pleased with how it came out and was thinking it was appropriate for more people than originally intended, so I decided to post it here. It has been edited slightly from its original as I removed the remarks about retirement, otherwise it is presented as written.
It is men and women like you who help give this country the freedoms that make it great. Men and women like you who help us speak without fear, pray to the God of our choosing, and live where we can be safe. You do this without recognition from a great many people who enjoy these freedoms, both those who do not understand why they have them, and others who raise their voices against you. Yet knowing this, you continue your mission to protect these freedoms for all of us.
Regarding this service that you have done relentlessly for all this time, I want you to know that there are many other voices who understand the sacrifices you have made and appreciate all you have done. I am one of those voices. Although I have stood beside you in this mission, I have also stood behind you reaping the benefits of the liberties you protect.

Thanks Mike! My hubby is a Navy fellow. Though he was on a carrier, and not directly in combat, he and I understand the important role he played in securing freedoms during the Vietnam war.
